What Is Peri-implantitis?
Peri-implantitis is an inflammation of the gums and bone surrounding an implant. It often begins with superficial irritation of the tissue. At this early stage, it is referred to as mucositis.
If the inflammation is not detected and treated—or is detected too late—it can spread and also attack the bone that holds the implant in place. The bone slowly breaks down over time. This often goes unnoticed at first. That is precisely why it is important to take even early changes seriously and to have them checked regularly.
