Which imaging techniques are used today

Implant planning combines various techniques, each of which provides different information. Together, they ultimately provide a complete picture.

Typical examples include:

• digital volume tomography (DVT)
• conventional X-rays
• digital impressions of the jaw

DVT plays a central role in this process because it provides a three-dimensional view of the jaw. It shows not only the height of the bone but also its width and exact spatial position. This is particularly important when nerves or the maxillary sinus must be taken into account.

Conventional X-rays are still used, however, for example, to assess remaining teeth. Digital scans also provide additional precise information about tooth alignment and the bite.

What Digital Diagnostics Also Enables

By combining this collected data on a computer, a virtual model of the jaw can be created. This is necessary to plan the implant position in advance—not just roughly, but with a high degree of precision. You can try out different positions and immediately see which option fits best. This may sound technical, but it’s very helpful in everyday practice.

Another benefit is that the final restoration is planned at the same time. This means the implant is not only aligned with the bone but also with how the crown will fit later on.

How the Planning Process Works in Practice

The process is usually clearly structured. First, all necessary data is collected and then digitally compiled. The dentist carefully examines the bone structure and assesses how much space is available. At the same time, sensitive areas that must not be damaged are taken into account. Then the position of the implant is determined. This involves not only the surgical aspects but also how the implant will be loaded later on.

In many cases, a drilling template is then created. This serves as a guide during the procedure and helps ensure that the planned position is achieved as precisely as possible.

What Are the Benefits of This Approach?

Digital planning makes it much easier to plan the treatment. When planning is done thoroughly in advance, the procedure itself usually goes more smoothly.

Limitations of Digital Planning

As helpful as the technology is, it also has its limitations. Planning is always based on the available data, and if that data is not precise, the result may differ from the plan. Furthermore, the actual situation in the mouth may differ slightly from the model. That is why the clinician’s experience remains crucial. Bone quality and the healing process also cannot be fully predicted. Therefore, thorough planning is extremely important. This not only helps the dentist but also the patient, who can gain a better understanding of what is planned and what the procedure will entail.
