Natural teeth have varying shades

If you look closely at teeth, you’ll quickly notice that they aren’t uniformly colored. Near the gums, teeth often appear slightly darker, while the cutting edge appears lighter and allows light to shine through in places. In addition, there are subtle differences between individual teeth, which are completely normal and give the dentition a lively appearance. For this reason, an implant crown is not based on a single color. The goal is to replicate the natural characteristics of the surrounding teeth as accurately as possible. Only then can a harmonious overall appearance be achieved.

How Tooth Color Is Determined

Treatment begins with a careful color analysis. A color chart is used for this purpose. The tooth colors on the chart are compared directly with the natural teeth until the right shade is found. In addition, some dental practices use digital color measurement devices that allow for objective measurement of tooth color. This device can even detect subtle differences that are barely perceptible to the naked eye. The result serves as the basis for the subsequent fabrication of the implant crown.

Photos are also frequently taken, providing the dental lab with valuable information about color gradients, light reflections, and the surface structure of the adjacent teeth. This allows the crown to be customized more precisely than would be possible based on the color value alone.

More Than Just the Actual Tooth Color

To ensure that an implant crown looks natural, numerous factors are taken into account during the planning process. Not every set of teeth has the same requirements, which is why each restoration is customized individually.

Factors taken into account include:

- Color of the adjacent teeth

- Brightness of the enamel

- Transparency at the incisal edges

- Natural color gradients

- Surface texture of the teeth

- Position of the implant

- Contour and color of the gums

- Age of the patient

- Personal aesthetic preferences

Even small differences can alter the overall appearance. That is why each implant crown is custom-made and adapted to the patient’s existing dental situation.

The material influences the natural appearance

In addition to color selection, choosing the right material is also important. Many implant crowns today are made of high-quality all-ceramic material, as this material closely resembles natural tooth enamel. It reflects and partially transmits light in a similar way, giving the crown a particularly lifelike appearance.

The final choice of material depends on the implant’s location. If the implant is in a highly visible area, the focus is on achieving the most natural appearance possible. In the posterior region, a material must be selected that can withstand high chewing forces over the long term.

Why Lighting Conditions Are Taken Into Account

The perception of a tooth’s color changes with lighting. Under daylight, the same tooth may look different than under artificial light. For this reason, color determination is performed under consistent conditions whenever possible. External factors can also alter color perception. Bright lipstick, heavy makeup, or eye-catching clothing can cast color casts on the teeth and make an objective assessment difficult. Many dental practices therefore create a neutral environment for color selection. For extensive restorations, the selected color is additionally checked under various light sources. This allows us to verify whether the implant crown looks harmonious.

Precision Work in the Dental Laboratory

The information provided by the dental practice serves as a crucial foundation for fabricating the implant crown. In the dental laboratory, the crown is custom-fitted to the patient. This involves not only matching the tooth color but also ensuring natural color gradients and a harmonious blend with the adjacent teeth. This ensures that the finished crown blends into the row of teeth as inconspicuously as possible. For complex restorations, the dental practice and dental laboratory work closely together to optimally adapt the implant crown to the patient’s individual circumstances.

Does the color remain the same over time?

Over the course of a lifetime, the color of natural teeth changes. Coffee, tea, red wine, or nicotine can lead to discoloration over time. The natural aging process also affects tooth color. However, ceramic implant crowns are largely resistant to such external influences. As a result, slight color differences may develop over the years between the crown and the natural teeth. Anyone planning to have their teeth whitened should therefore have the procedure done before the implant crown is fabricated, if possible. Ceramic cannot be lightened by bleaching, so the crown can then be matched to the new tooth color.
